I installed a fireplace insert, how can I keep the underside of the mantel from getting extremely hot?
The best way is to put in a layer of fire brick or some other ceramic.
Another good way is to install a vent fan to keep air flowing through there.
My best guess though is that your insert isn’t set back far enough in the cavity. Try that first as it’s the cheapest way to go.
