Fireplace Design Ideas for That Perfect Design

A boring fireplace design is not something that is attractive to say the least. And with all of the cool options and styles you have to choose from these days, it never needs to look that way. There is no reason not to take control of the feel of your home by honing in on that perfect fireplace design idea.

To truly unlock the potential in any fireplace, you have to know some common design fundamentals. These deal with three things — the hearth, the opening and the firebox. Additionally, you have to take into consideration how these three elements will tie into the room in which the fireplace rests.

So first, let’s discuss some terms. The hearth is the outside of the fireplace, generally speaking. The firebox itself is where the fire is burned and contained. The opening is the shape of the opening of the box. Generally it will be a rectangular opening.

When contemplating different design ideas, start with the hearth. You should consider different positional placing for the hearth. You can have it rest on the floor. Or you can suspend it so it is above the floor. The final option is to sink it, so it rests lower than the floor.

There is also the occasional fireplace design idea that does not incorporate a hearth at all. In these special circumstances, there are things you must do to the firebox so the floor doesn’t get burned. You can dress your fireplace up with different hearths.

If you are on a budget, this is where you can really stretch your dollar to design something that looks beautiful but is inexpensive.

The firebox itself is pretty straightforward, and like the hearth, generally is designed in relation to the floor. Also, the size of the firebox should be taken into consideration.

While most design ideas incorporate a rectangular fireplace opening, it doesn’t mean that you have to. For example, you can flare out the opening; you can even flare it inward, toward the fireplace.

Or perhaps you’d like to arch the top to match other design elements in the room. Or maybe you’d like to try something unique and create a fireplace opening that has no straight lines at all, but is one long curve. The most likely place you’ll see these opening are in homes that have a southwest theme.

Remember that each of these elements will affect all other elements, and also will influence the feel of the room. Keep this in mind when considering different fireplace design ideas.

How to make a blue fireplace look good.?

Me and my boyfriend are thinking about renting this house. It has a great yard, new apliances, and…a blue fireplace?!? http://nvpm.net/images/IMG_1673.JPG
I was thinking that it wouldn’t be so bad if we could somehow incorporate it into the design and make it look cool, so it flows nicely with the room and doesn’t stick out like it does in this picture. Any ideas? Thanks so much!

That’s not bad. It stands out because it’s so WHITE in the room. If you do a taupe or a gray on the walls, it won’t show up as much. If you can’t paint, put curtains up and pictures and accessories. The room is too stark. Check out hgtv.com for ideas. Also before your paint check out paint swatches and bring them home to look at them in the light of that room. Roxanne

Fireplace Log Racks

On a cold winters day, there is nothing quite like sitting around a crackling fire. That fireplaces are considered such a necessary part of homes around the world is, therefore, hardly a surprise. Even though fireplaces are no longer necessary to keep houses warm, their popularity has actually been increasing in recent years. This is in spite of the fact that other sources of heat are usually more convenient.

So, why are they so popular? Well, there is something comforting about seeing where the warmth is coming from. In addition to the comfort factor, there is also the nostalgic one, as there is something about looking into a fire that reminds us all of good times spent in front of a fire in the past. There is no denying the aesthetic value of fireplaces either. Put simply, they just look great! They create a focal point for a room, and give even the most modern of homes a traditional and rustic feel.

Though they look great just on themselves, a log rack can make a fireplace look even better. They offer a functional purpose too, as, without one, the wood needed to keep the fire going can end up getting in the way and making a mess of the floor. Log racks in various designs and finishes can be found, including ornamental, curved, contemporary, black or bronze, so something is available to compliment any room or personal taste. For those willing to invest more, higher end models with unique, hand-forged accents and designs can also be found.

You might also want to consider purchasing a log rack / wood carrier combination, which helps to keep maintenance time down to a minimum. With these, you can take the product apart when collecting the wood and, after the wood is taken inside the room with the fire, the wood carrier part can then be placed directly back on to the log rack, meaning that no unloading of the wood is necessary.

Finally, if you are someone who would love to have a fireplace but can not due to one reason or another, then opt for an artificial one instead. These now look incredibly realistic, as they have life-like ceramic logs within them, that turn red and orange when the gas is turned is on. With the addition of a log rack stacked full of wood next to an artificial fireplace, hardly anyone would be able to tell the difference. You can have the full visually pleasing appearance of a real fireplace, but without the maintenance and safety concerns that one entails.

Product to create wood burning smell from a gas log fireplace?

We love a wood burning smell, but have only a gas fired log fireplace. Is there any product/drops/sticks that would duplicate the smell of a real wood burning fireplace??

Good question!!!

I would do the same as for a gas grill in the summer.

When you open your next tuna-fish can allow the “lid” to stay on. Then take one of those can openers that makes triangles and poke triangles all around the bottom of the sides just far enough apart not to touch and to hold wood chips. Then take wood chips of your choice and soak them in water for at least 30 minutes so they won’t BURN but will only smolder. Drain them, put them in the can, close the lid and place the can very near where the flames come out of your gas logs. The smoke will give you the smell you want and then go up the chimney of the gas fireplace.

The Introduction to Fireplaces

Fireplace is a usual gathering place for the entire family because it provides heat and even serves as a factor of architectural approach. Since fireplace is even considered as the hearth, it can represent a house and is one of the powerful models. Even though most of the fireplaces are constructed in the same fashion and share all the same features, one of the basic fireplaces include central base of cement, a smoke chamber, a flue, a crown, a spark arrestor, a chimney chase, a shroud or a cap, a ash dump, a lintel bar, a damper, a breast and an exceptional facing. Fireplaces are said to be famous for friendly gatherings. The comfortable warmness that provides by the fireplace gives an appealing and joyful atmosphere which makes for an excellent conversation with your family members.

A fireplace is an arched opening or a rectangular or even square opening normally attached to a wall at the bottom of a vent or a chimney. Fireplace is frequently lined with stonework or minerals and is utilized for an open fire within the house. In the modern era, fireplace is considered as an ornament and also a much needed factor of the house. Although most of the fireplaces are created in the interiors of the building then there are certain situations which people make outdoor fireplaces. This is being done in order to make the evening look warm, for decorative purposes or for outdoor cooking. There are number of choices from conservative wood burning fireplace that is still common, to surprisingly marble fireplace or even a gas fireplace to which most of the authorities state that they are easier to preserve or use and also are environmental pleasant.

Fireplace mantelpieces or mantels are the main focus of traditional interior decoration by designers and architects. These fireplace mantles are also commonly known as chimneypiece which is utilized to trap smoke. As the mantel developed the attractive structure near the fireplace frequently became referred to as the mantelpiece or the fireplace mantel. These days this mantelpiece is a usual word for the external trimmings, mantel shelf and jambs of the fireplace. For most of the years this mantelpiece was one of the most creative and decorative features of a room. However, the creativity along with the realistic significance of the fireplaces have even grown less because of modern methods of launching heat and even small models of fireplaces.

In the meantime, combining all the qualities of moldability, heat retention, fire resistance and concrete are instantly becoming well-known materials for fireplace surrounds, hearths and mantels. Even the flexibility of the concrete has made it one of the main materials which can be shaped into any sort of forms importantly stained or colored so that it could match any color. In addition, it is one of the materials which can even display any surfaces between highly buffed to a rough surface. This mantelpiece like ability makes concrete flexible to a wide choice of ornamental styles from typical to modern. One can find these modern day fireplaces at some of the fireplace warehouses around your city. You can get similar type of components which can make your house exclusive and beautiful.

How can tell if my fireplace surround is made from real marble or fake marble?

Most fire surrounds are made from reconstituted marble eg: chippings and powder bonded then polished, the finish is so good it is impossible to tell the difference. There are formica type inserts used but they are easy to distinguish because they are flexible. If the surround is obviously old due to chipping or has defects it is probably original.

how to build firepit?

trying to find instructions on how to build an outdoor in-ground firepit.

Depends really what you’re wanting it for. There’s different ways of doing it if you wanted say a fire for cooking on, keeping warm by or simply burning rubbish.

If it’s just for burning rubbish then choose a safe location away from buildings, vegetation etc and where the prevailing wind won’t cause a smoke nuisance. Try to find somewhere reasonably sheltered.

Dig it as deep as you need it to be but with gently sloping sides – if the sides are steep air can’t easily get the the fire and it’ll be hard to light and keep going. Typically between 300 and 600mm should suffice for an avaerage garden fire.

Remove stones, bricks etc as rapidly heating them can cause them to explode. Make sure there’s no roots as burning through them can kill the tree or bush and make sure the ground itself isn’t flammable – i.e. don’t set your firepit in peaty soil or soil that consists of a lot of vegetation.

You could put stones around the perimeter of the hole but if you’ve dug it deep enough you don’t need to.

If you want something permenant then line the pit with fire-bricks and set in place with fire-clay or fire-cement, don’t use ordinary household bricks. You could build up from the ground by a few courses, it’s an idea to leave gaps between each brick to allow air through.

When it’s done, why not invite some friends around, crack open a couple of beers and have a barby.

Please help me understand drapes?

I have a 6 foot sliding door in the living room of my conso. The decor is eclectic – nice plaid couch and love seat with dark wood tables. Fireplace is black metal surrounded by earth color tiles and painted wood trim and mantle. I want some drapes as cheap as possible. I prefer to have them draw both ways rather than like most patio doors that go one way. I want them to draw all the way off the 6 foot door. How wide should the drapes be? Can I use pocket drapes or are they too hard to draw? How about the kind with grommets? Are drapes hard to make? My sister sews.

Any comments, ideas or suggestions.

Drapes can be a little fussy but aren’t all that difficult to sew. What I would do is find the fabric you like, and before you buy it, try and estimate how wide your drape would be when it’s open, that is, how much space the gathered open drape will take up once it has cleared the window. This will tell you how wide your curtain rod has to be. A thin fabric will need less room, a stiff one more. Ask wherever they sell the fabric, they can help with that. That will tell you how wide your curtain rod will have to be–the width of the window plus the space at the side for when the drapes are open. Then you must buy enough fabric so that the drapes are 1 and 1/2 times as wide as the rod. If your rod is 8 feet wide, the drapes should be 12 feet wide. They should reach to within an inch or so of the floor. You need that extra fabric so they have gathers in them and look like drapes when they’re closed and not a bedsheet nailed to the wall. Your sister may be able to help with this part.

If you want as cheap as possible, try Wal-Mart or the bargain bin at any place that sells fabric, but be prepared. Usually the fabric you like isn’t cheap. You will probably need at least 9 yards of fabric, but note that fabrics come in different widths, and if you want to block light you can’t use thin fabric. Some fabrics simply aren’t suitable for drapes, either. You would need less yardage if it’s a wide fabric. Maybe you better take your sister fabric shopping with you. She should be able to calculate what you need of a particular fabric, though the people in the store can do that too. Don’t skimp on the yardage. Better to have too much than too little. You can’t just sort of patch a piece in if you run out of fabric length. Take a drawing with measurements on it.

Pocket drapes usually are a bit of a nuisance to draw. Grommets draw nicely, but it can be a bit of bother to find someone with a grommet tool large enough to install grommets to go on a curtain rod. It’s a bit of a specialty thing and might be expensive to have done. Conventional I-beam rods are very easy to draw and to install onto the wall and to put the drapes on, and you can draw them easily whichever way you want by pulling on the drapes themselves. They’re your best bet for simplicity though not for looks because you will see the rod when the drapes are open. People usually cover the top bit with a valance for this reason. Wooden or decorative metal rods and their hardware aren’t cheap, but with rings on they draw well and look nice. The other way which is easy to draw is a wire, with which you can use smaller grommets, but if you’re hanging them outside a window frame it’s a little tricky to install the hardware to hold the wire since it must be under a fair amount of tension to work well.

And before you tackle all this, check Home Depot and Wal-Mart and so on. They have pre-made drapes. If the colour and the length works for you, all you have to do is buy enough panels to cover your window, and your hardware. It can be cheaper to buy those pre-made drapes than to sew your own.
