How do I install gas fireplace components?
When I bought my condo, the fireplace has gas line capped but I would like to buy components to connect. How hard is it to do that? Are there complete self installation kits to allow that? I currently only burn the duraflame logs but would really like a gas fireplace kit to connect. If you have done this recently, how much did the kit cost and was it professionally installed?
I do not live in Great Britain.
I live in California. The gas line already runs to fireplace. It is simply a matter of buying a kit with the logs and the connector to the pipe, I think.
Black pipe is never a DIY project even in the US. You can get a gas log and have a plumber connect it for 1 hour of labor (about$80 around here)
Consider carefully if you want to go this route in the first place. A vented gas log will require that you disable or clamp your damper which makes that room hard to heat since you will essentially have a hole letting heat out all the time. To make it worse you wont get much usable heat from it.
If you do decide to get one also buy a chimney balloon so you can at least plug the flue while you are not using it.
